Well anyway the point of this blog post was not to lecture you on the wonders of the creative world but to highlight a particularly lovely thing that I find myself doing most of the time and to highly recommend the exercise to you.
I find that when you experience an artwork or a piece of music or a poem or book or interpretive dance or whatever, you are able to tell someone how you feel about it without pinpointing exactly what it was about the work that you liked/disliked/found interesting etc. I used to be guilty of this ("Dude I just love Spy Kids! I don't know why! I just really love it! But Spy Kids 3 was the worst! I know!! So bad!"). I didn't make a conscious decision to start being really SPECIFIC when it comes to opinions on things but I found that the more passionate I was about something, the more I wanted to talk about the intricacies of it. This is something I've been experiencing more and more with other people and I cannot describe to you the joy I find in someone else's unadulterated love for something. When someone gets really SPECIFIC about how much/exactly why they adore something, you know they're for real and there's just nothing better ("Well, I just think Spy Kids was the greatest movie ever made because of the nostalgic and whimsical qualities of the novelty gadgets used by both the parents and the kids, juxtaposed against a background of disturbing political unrest which can only be made peaceful by the innocence and hope that surround Carmen and Juni as the spy kids. Dude!")
Here are some very specific things that I am very passionate about. Hopefully this obscure collection will inspire you to collate and organise your own most favourite things.
The part in 'Let The Sunshine In' where it goes 'The suu-uuun...shine iii-iiiin...'
About the 3.15 mark in 'Marry The Night' where it goes 'M-m-m-marry...(MARRY!)..m-m-m-marry..(MARRY!)..m-m-m-marry the NIIIIGHT!'
The lyric there's a train in my heart/that doesn't seem to start/unless you're lying next to me from 'First Impression' by Justin Vernon.
The little portrait in the Mexican Frida's hand in the painting Las Dos Fridas.
The line tomorrow I will be sweet lord, I will set them free. The box is only temporary from Sylvia Plath's The Arrival of the Bee Box. When Willy Wonka sings the song about spring ('Spring time..the only merry ring time...birds sing...') when he's riding the bike to mix some concoction he's brewing. The part in 'Pictures of You' by The Cure where Robert Smith goes wooo and then the best line there was nothing in the world that I ever wanted more, than to feel you deep in my heart. In fact speaking of The Cure, in 'Friday I'm In Love' the greatest lyric is spinning round and round/always take a big bite/it's such a gorgeous sight/to see you eat in the middle of the night. That part in Almost Famous when Zooey Deschanel looks straight into the camera and says 'One day, you'll be cool.' The end part, when it goes all treble-y, of the opening guitar riff of 'Naive' by The Kooks. The part in Popcorn by Hot Butter like two thirds of the way through where the synths go all arpeggio-wild and it feels like hallucinating. When The Beatles sing 'You've Got To Hide Your Love Away' in Help! and John holds his head up high with his chin all jutting out and Ringo plays the tambourine and looks all dopey.
